OnePlus X, OnePlus 2, & OnePlus 3/3T get AOSP Android Pie ports

OnePlus, OnePlus India

There was a void left behind when Google shifted away from the Nexus program to focus on the Pixel brand. Many would agree that OnePlus has been able to fill that void with their high-end hardware, premium design, and respectable update speed while keeping the price from getting too inflated. With Google releasing the source code to Android 9 Pie recently, many of the community developers here have begun their work on ports of the new Android Pie update for a handful of OnePlus smartphones including the OnePlus X, OnePlus 2, OnePlus 3, and OnePlus 3T. The OnePlus X and OnePlus 2 did not receive the Android Nougat update, so this will be a major version bump for those devices. On the other hand, the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T are promised an official Android Pie update, so these ROMs will be a nice way to experience the latest release before the official update.

OnePlus X Android 9 Pie Port

The device that was left behind, the OnePlus X, has received a port to the latest version of Android thanks to the work of XDA Senior Member YumeMichi. The developer has labeled this as a testing build at this time as there are a couple of known issues at the time of writing this article. Here is a list of what works and doesn't work on this Android Pie release for the OnePlus X.

OnePlus 2 Android 9 Pie Port

The port of Android 9 Pie to the OnePlus 2 comes to us thanks to the work from XDA Recognized Developer and Contributor Shreesha.Murthy. First up we have a port of the Pixel Experience custom ROM that brings the OnePlus 2 up to Android 9 Pie. This build was released recently and while there aren't any known bugs listed in the original post, some early testers say there are some small visual bugs present here and there. We do have a list of what hardware is working, though, so remember, this release and the builds listed below have been released very early so small bugs like these are to be expected.

What's Working:

  • WiFi
  • RIL
  • Mobile Data
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Flashlight
  • Camcorder
  • Bluetooth
  • Fingerprint Reader
  • HW Buttons
  • Alert Slider and Gestures
  • Sound / Vibration

OnePlus 3/OnePlus 3T Android 9 Pie Port

The Android 9 Pie port for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T has just been released thanks to the work of XDA Senior Member JagravNaik. This is another port of the Pixel Experience ROM that updates these two devices. The ROM is considered to be in a beta state due to some known issues with NFC and encryption not being supported yet. However, tests have currently shown us that the following works quite well in this early beta release.

What's Working:

  • WiFi
  • RIL
  • Mobile Data
  • GPS
  • Camera
  • Flashlight
  • Camcorder
  • Bluetooth
  • Fingerprint Reader
  • HW Buttons
  • Alert Slider and Gestures
  • Sound / Vibration
  • VoLTE

The developer of this port was even able to provide some screenshots of the release for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T.

Other OnePlus Devices

The OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, and OnePlus 6 will officially get the Android Pie update. The OnePlus 6 is on the Android Pie beta program and just recently received a new beta Pie update in China, so we shouldn't be too far off from a new OxygenOS update based on Pie. As for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, we don't know when the release will be made available, but thanks to the devices receiving Project Treble support and having active developer communities, custom Android 9-based ROMs shouldn't be too far off from release.
