adb daemon not running port 5037 mac help

I have an Imac and I'm running the newest software. When android N dev came out i put it on my phone using adb. Now when i try to do anything with adb it gives me an error " daemon not running port 5037 " i have tried to fix this using what i saw online- ./adb kill-server and ./adb start-server but when i do this my comp restarts. What can i do to fix this short of whipping my comp and starting over?
